Choosing which field fits best with our interests and be open-minded in reading much literature to broaden our knowledge is one of applicable tips that was given by Herri Mulyono, PhD, who earned third place in Dosen berprestasi di Bidang Riset for the UHAMKA Award 2020.
The lecturer who is also the Head of the Scientific Publication Support and Enhancement Unit (UPPI), is one of the senior lecturers in the Department of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Pedagogy, University of Muhammadiyah Prof. DR. HAMKA (UHAMKA). He received his PhD at the University of York, United Kingdom, in 2018 and has been active as a lecturer and a scientist for more than ten years.
He developed his competence in research during his study in the UK. His motivation and value to share the knowledge and practices he obtains for many people’s benefit makes him who he is today. He said that commitment and self-determination to work are two other critical success factors in life or any field of interest.
When asked about the essential things in writing a research report, he pointed out several things. First, it is a must to comprehend the characteristic of an appropriate scientific paper to be read easily by people. Then, choose which field fits best with the interests will be investigated and be open-minded in reading much literature to broaden our knowledge. And then he mentioned that Teacher Professional Development, Computer-assisted language learning (CALL), Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) are some of the fields he is interested in.
He said, “Our English language education department should be the research centre in foreign language teaching and learning. To this end, we have to develop our research maps, and of course, research competencies.”
